The citadel, a date at the top
Perched on a rocky spur more than a hundred metres above the town, the citadel designed by Vauban is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Climbing to its ramparts together treats you to a unique panorama over the river loop and the rooftops of the old town. Its museums and gardens promise a whole day of discoveries, and just as many conversation topics.
Strolling through the old town
On the way down, get lost in the cobbled lanes of the historic centre, between façades of bluish local stone and hidden courtyards. On Place de la Révolution, lined with old buildings, the terraces invite you to carry on talking. Nearby, the Granvelle Palace houses the Museum of Time, a nod to Besançon’s great watchmaking tradition: perfect for a second date on a rainy day.
Along the water
A cruise on the Doubs goes all the way round the loop and even passes beneath the citadel through a tunnel: an original and romantic outing. The landscaped quays are also lovely for walks or bike rides at dusk. On Lyad, members across the Doubs share their tips and ideas for going out, a great way to find someone to come aboard with you.
